李孟贤祖籍广东台山，在西雅图出生，父母是来自广东台山的移民，家境清寒，父亲担任厨师，母亲是裁缝，他靠苦读和奖学金拿到柏克莱加州大学法学学位。毕业后担任人权律师，后来进入旧金山市府任职。

11日晚上10点30分，李孟贤在家附近的Safeway超市购物时突然倒下，12日凌晨被送往医院，于1点11分去世。随后，李孟贤办公室发表简短声明，证实死讯，表示把该办公室同仁的哀悼与慰问送给李孟贤的夫人林进敏及两位千金。
据朋友透露，李孟贤生前以友善和幽默著称，处理政务注重细节、讲求共识。2011年，旧金山市长纽森出任加州副州长，李孟贤被指派担任代理市长。同年11月，李孟贤参加旧金山民选市长选举，最终赢得市长选举，成为旧金山第一位民选华裔市长。
